Want To Quit Smoking? Get Outside Of Yourself

September 5th, 2008 · No Comments

When you are trying to quit smoking, sometimes we need to remember that there is a world out there greater than ourselves. So often we become all consumed with our issues that we forget that we are just a small part of a larger universe.

So get out of your shell, or ?your own little world,? and open yourself up to experiencing the world around you. Environmental psychologists believe that our physical surroundings influence our mental health. By trying just a few of these practices, you can begin to open your mind up to a world that is greater than yourself which will help you put your life, and your smoking habit, into perspective.

? Take a walk. Even if it is a short one, start walking. Notice the things around you, and take in the fresh air and sunlight. Listen to the birds chirping and the children playing.

? Find a nearby park. If you live in an urban area, familiarize yourself with local parks and make it a common practice to go there and walk or just sit down with a book or journal and take in the nature around you.

? Plant a garden. Go to a farm and garden store or a garden department. Explain your needs and get suggestions on what you should start with.

? If possible, plant flowers or hang potted plants in an outdoor area of your home. Spend more time outdoors, and enjoy the plants that are living around you.

?Bring the outside inside. Open doors and windows, plant herbs in your kitchen windowsill.

? Adopt a pet. Animals reduce stress and provide companionship.

?Appreciate the weather. Listen to the rain, play in the snow, or lay down in the leaves that have fallen.

All of the above techniques will reduce your stress levels on your journey to quit smoking and help remind you that there is a world greater than your own. Sometimes you just need to sit back and take notice of it. Once you do, you should find a little more strength in your journey to quit smoking.
