The top five reasons to give up smoking are:

* Health ? are you already suffering the ill effects of smoking? Perhaps members of your family are affected by second hand smoke leading to bronchitis, asthma or other health problems.

* Better professional image ? do you really want to be remembered for your smoky breath and stale smell on your body from smoking cigarettes. You are brighter when you are smoke free.

* Sense of achievement ? you have been controlled by cigarettes for so long. Now your desire to be happy, healthy and smoke free is driving you to take back control of you.

* Set a good image ? maybe you have a baby or grandchild and you wish to set a good example to children. Or perhaps you have been promoted and your desire to be smoke free is two fold ? better image at work and encouraging those under you to be become smoke free.

* More money ? think what you could do with the money you can save by not spending it on cigarettes. It is like a tax free pay rise for you.

Am I Ready to be Smoke free?

Ask yourself the following questions, take your time and answer them honestly.

* What will being smoke free do for you?
* What have you been getting out of smoking until now?
* Can you list at least 3 reasons for becoming smoke free?
* When do you want to be smoke free?
* Is there any context in which you don?t want to be smoke free?
* What stops you from making the change?
* Is there anything you could lose as a result of being smoke free?
* What will you gain by being smoke free.
* What do you need to do in order to become smoke free?
* Is what you want worth wanting?
* What could go wrong?
* Can anything stop you?
* Are you ready to be smoke free?

Write your answers down to make sure you have really thought about becoming smoke free.

Checklist

You need to make sure that you are 100% ready to be smoke free. The reason why you have not become smoke free in the past was probably due to the fact that part of you (at a subconscious level) wanted to continue smoking. See Am I Ready to be Smoke free?.

You must ensure that:

* You are not undergoing any major life stresses at present;
* You can devote 30 minutes a day to listen to your session for the next three weeks;
* You are prepared to follow the Tips for Staying Smoke free

If you are a recovering alcoholic or drug addict you must ensure that you have a support system in place. You have worked hard to overcome your previous addiction so you do not want to revert to it. Support is extremely important.

So, you have started the process of stopping smoking and you are well into the first few days.

How is it going?

Some people sail through it and “never have any cravings.” Most people don’t though.

It can be disappointing when you feel that you need to have a cigarette whilst others don’t seem to have the same feelings. But don’t worry – you are in the majority.

You must remember that you have been smoking every day for 5, 10, 15, 20 years or more. Your body is used to regular supplies of nicotine. It craves the drug. But you are not giving it any.

And your body doesn’t like it.

Therefore it makes you feel bad. Why shouldn’t it? Nobody said that giving up smoking was going to be easy – that is probably why you have not been able to give up over all these years.

The cravings are simply your body’s way of telling you that it misses what you have been giving it.

And, what have you been giving it? Well, for starters there is the nicotine that has made you habituated. Then there are the thousands of chemicals that clog up your lungs and the lungs of your children and friends. And then, of course, there are the thousand other chemicals that cause the majority of smokers to have either lung cancer, heart disease, strokes or a whole range of other diseases.

So, let’s not start that smoking game again. Fight these cravings – it’s not that hard. Have courage and will power. Within a few days, your cravings will have disappeared.

There are numerous reasons behind why you should quit. You know them all. Along with cancer, heart disease, and emphysema, smoking can also cause vascular disease and inhibit circulation. This is particularly applicable to men who have erectile dysfunction or ED because improper circulation to all areas of the body, including the genital area, can make it difficult to achieve and maintain an erection. We all know that men who smoke are about twice more likely to develop ED than nonsmokers.

Do not drop your gun! The good news is that once you quit smoking, your health starts to improve immediately. Your blood pressure decreases, your chance of a heart attack goes down, and your circulation begins to improve within two to 12 weeks. As a result the possibility of a strong and lasting penile erection also increases. If you are a smoker and want to quit, here are some tips to get you started:

Pick a date to quit and then prepare for the date. Remove all cigarettes, ashtrays, matches, and lighters from your home, office, and car.

If you smoke more than nine cigarettes a day, ask your doctor about medications that can help you quit smoking.

When you have an urge to smoke, engage in a different activity to distract yourself.

Try to avoid people or situations that make you want to smoke.

Tell everyone who is around you that you are going to stop smoking. They will help you to stick to your plan.

Do relaxing activities to reduce stress, exercise, meditate, take a bubble bath, and sleep properly.

Spend more of your time in places that do not permit smoking.

Keep reminding yourself of the benefits of not smoking, including improved sexual function.

You may have some withdrawal symptoms, but these usually last less than two weeks. There will also be some difficult urges that you will successfully deal with. There are smoking cessation aids and FDA-approved non-nicotine drugs like Chantix or Zyban. Talk to your doctor and ask him about a medicine that will be able to help you.

Quitting smoke is not an easy task, yet not impossible either. Millions of smokers quit smoking because of their personal and family health purposes. All you need to have is your ?will power? and the help of a professional health care specialist. There are therapies and medicines available for your help. Just take a step towards a smoke-free healthy world.

However, few people have viable instructions to follow to achieve this goal. A low cholesterol diet example is the ideal tool for helping people to create a healthy eating plan.

Most of the diet samples for lowering cholesterol are quite well organized and helpful in the cause. The healthy eating plans can help you lose weight while improving your blood cholesterol levels. You get the best of both worlds, an attractively healthy body that looks great on the outside.

While we generally know which foods to avoid in most cases, we often have difficulty knowing which items to adopt into our eating plans. This can be the most challenging aspect of trying to maintain a healthy diet. We know what we should not do but we really dont have a viable plan of action to take.

A low cholesterol diet example is the perfect tool for finding inspiration. Many of us learn through modeling and once we have a good set of instructions t follow, we are more apt to succeed. Having a good sample of a diet plan that is effective in lowering blood cholesterol levels is very important.

Consider going to work and receiving backward instructions from your supervisor. If this person follows you around alerting you to each and every thing that you should avoid doing, he is not effectively communicating what you should do. Detailed instructions along with examples are better approaches to training anyone who needs to learn.

The same goes for diet plans. We are often so focused on what we are not supposed to have that we fail to see the many things that we can enjoy on a healthy eating program. A good low cholesterol diet example is the key to getting specific instructions that you can realistically follow.

This gives the eating plan a positive spin. Rather than focusing on foods that you can not have on the plan the focus is on the great items that you can enjoy while working your way towards a healthier lifestyle. This is a much better approach that offers motivation and positive energy rather than a strong sense of denial.

Few people really like the idea of going on a healthy eating plan especially when faced with the feeling of being denied things that they love. A low cholesterol diet example can serve to illustrate just how wonderful a healthy lifestyle can be.

Smoking is emerging to be one of the major causes of death in the modern world. This is attributed to the growing consumers of tobacco. Tobacco is responsible for the death of 1 in 10 adults all over the world, which translates to around 5 million deaths every year. It is because of this fact that cigarette smoking is now a public health priority.

As we mentioned previously, the boom in cigarette smoking occurred sometime during the First World War. Tobacco companies were successful in including their products as part of the military ration. At the time, soldiers under the stress of warfare took up smoking. And since then, the tobacco industry has grown through an increased consumer patronage all over the world.

With the prevalence of cigarette smoking came its adverse health effects on its consumers. Smoking poses dangers directly and indirectly to the public. An indirect public health concern that cigarettes may pose is accidental fire. As for the health risks in smoking tobacco, the disease mainly strikes the cardiovascular system, resulting to heart attack, respiratory tract diseases, and even cancer.

In spite of these risks, the number of cigarette smokers all other the world has not dropped considerably. Though several smokers claim to have been meaning to quit this habit, they just find it so difficult. The fact is that after smoking for quite sometime, quitting smoking will prove to be very hard, but not impossible.

Why is it hard to quit smoking?

Foremost, this is because most smokers become addicted to the nicotine contained in tobacco products. Nicotine has a deadly addictive power. How? When a person puffs a cigarette, nicotine particles find their way to the lungs through inhalation. From there, nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream just like the oxygen people breathe. It travels with the blood to the brain where it locks onto certain receptor areas. Dopamine is then released into the brain. This is the chemical that makes the smoker feel a euphoric sensation. Smokers find it difficult to quit because

Not knowing what to do with their hands is another common complaint among ex-smokers while quitting. Once people get hooked, smoking becomes a big part of their lives. They seem to enjoy holding on a stick of cigarette and puffing on them. And after a long period of lighting up, it becomes a routine. As a fact, humans are creatures of habit. By some force of habit, smokers find themselves reaching for a cigarette and lighting it up automatically without thinking about it.

Certain ?triggers? in the environment may also hamper a smoker?s desire to quit. Things may turn on a smoker?s need for a cigarette. These may be feelings, places, and moods. Even the things done routinely may trigger this craving for a smoke.

For those who have been smoking for quite a while already, they may not realize it but they form some emotional attachment to cigarettes. They find the cigarette calming and comforting during those stressful times. Cigarette smoking somehow becomes an extension of their social life, particularly when they are emotionally at the highest or lowest. Giving the smoker a feeling that giving up smoking would seem like giving up a trusted friend.

These are only some of the major reasons why it is hard to quit smoking. But there are also several strategies and quitting techniques that may aid smokers to finally give up on this tenacious habit. Quitting smoking all begins with one?s intention to stop. They must have the will power to overcome the craving for smoke. There are also a lot of quit smoking products in the market. These may also be worth trying. Support groups are proved to be very helpful, too.

Smokers must understand that to quit smoking may take more than one attempt. They must also try several methods before they can finally succeed. Smoking is a stubborn habit because it is closely tied to the acts in the course of people?s everyday lives. Even so, with determination, will power, and a strategy, to quit smoking is not out of the question and we will discuss some of the methods in further chapters.

Beta Sitosterol is a plant phytosterol that offers many benefits to your health. Many of these are due to its effect in reducing both total and LDL cholesterol in the blood, although that is not the only effect that phytosterols can have on your body.

Phytosterol is one of many phytochemicals that are beneficial to your health, and the term ?phyto? simply indicates that the substance is obtained from plants. Phytosterols are not obtainable in your diet from animal sources, and beta sitosterol is mainly found in seeds, soy and corn oils. Because of this, most of the population do not have high intake, and so supplements are generally the most common source of this valuable material.

There are commonly two types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL, and it is the LDL form that is said to be the ?bad? cholesterol. In fact the terms refer to the high density and low density lipoproteins that carry the cholesterol around the body. Cholesterol itself is fat soluble, and does not dissolve in water. It therefore cannot travel through the blood without the aid of a water soluble protein, which is what the lipoproteins are.

Low density lipoproteins consist of a charged protein portion and a lipid, or fat, frequently a triglyceride. The charged protein portion is water soluble, and can carry the lipid and cholesterol round the blood. Cholesterol is not a bad substance, but carries out many useful functions, one of which is repairing damage to blood vessels: a bit like a sticking plaster. However, the LDL can become oxidized by free radicals in the body, and it is this oxidized LDL that reacts by depositing fatty plaques of cholesterol onto the arterial walls and ultimately blocking them.

The HDL carries cholesterol from the blood to the liver where it is destroyed and then secreted, which is why it is sometimes termed ?good? cholesterol. Beta sitosterol significantly reduces the amount of both LDL and total cholesterol levels in the blood. Once the total cholesterol level has dropped to a certain level, then the body produces more HDL cholesterol and so maintains balance that is higher than normal in the ?good? HDL cholesterol.

The way that phytosterols do this is believed to be by reducing the absorption of dietary cholesterol in the gut, because the sterols have a similar chemical structure to cholesterol and can occupy the cholesterol absorption sites. Beta sitosterol is particularly effective in this mechanism. Rather than the body absorbing cholesterol it passes it thorough the gut unchanged and eliminates it.

The National Cholesterol Education Program has recommended that the optimum blood LDL cholesterol level is below 100 mg/dl and that the total of LDL and HDL be below 200 mg/dl. A regular intake of beta sitosterol can help to maintain these levels without reducing your cholesterol to a dangerously low level. As previously stated, cholesterol is an essential component of your normal biochemistry, and too low a level could be dangerous. What you need is natural regulation of the LDL form, and that is what beta sitosterol and the other phytosterols do. However, beta sitosterol does more than just control your cholesterol balance.

It also supports the health of your prostate. Studies indicate that a daily intake of 60 mg ? 130 mg beta sitosterol can reduce the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, the Sunday name for non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. This could be due to its effect on LDL cholesterol levels, since other studies have indicated a possible connection between high cholesterol levels and prostate enlargement. This might again be due to the occupation of receptor sites in the prostate cell membranes by the phytosterol. Saw palmetto, commonly used to treat prostate problems, contains beta sitosterol.

It also appears to modulate the biochemical synthesis of cytokines, which are responsible for the inflammatory response of the immune system to foreign invaders and tissue damage. It also appears to boost the activity of NK-cells, and also of the proliferation of lymphocytes in general. Another effect of beta sitosterol is in normalizing the insulin and blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes. It does this by inhibiting the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase that is responsible for the conversion of carbohydrates to D-glucose which raises blood sugar levels. The upshot is that the onset of age related Type 2 diabetes is delayed.

In general, beta sitosterol displays many properties beneficial to your health. It displays anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, is believed to be responsible for the suppression of cancers of the colon and prostate, and lymphocytic leukemia. It appears to act as an anti-inflammatory, and has a beneficial effect on ulcers and cramps. There is even evidence that it can help to cure allergies, although more studies are required to confirm this. Those suffering from specific allergies have reported a lessening of the effects when taking beta sitosterol supplements, although it is possible that other dietary factors were also involved.

Beta sitosterol is contained in some concentration or another in most plants, but those richest in the phytosterol are wheat germ, peanuts, soybeans, corn oil, pumpkin seeds and rice bran. None of these form a particularly large part of the western diet, and a supplement is likely the best way to ensure a sufficiently adequate frequent intake as to have a significant effect on your LDL cholesterol level.

Although a daily intake of 300 mg has been cited by some sources as adequate, there have been no reported ill effects of taking this supplement at higher dosages. As already stated, your cholesterol levels are self regulating to a minimum level and you cannot completely block its absorption. Hence, it is not possible to take so much beta sitosterol as to reduce your LDL cholesterol to a dangerously low level.

There is sufficient evidence for the effects of beta sitosterol on the body to indicate that if your diet is low in those seeds, nuts and beans that contain significant quantities, the a supplement will provide you with benefits to your health, particularly if you have high blood cholesterol levels or problems with your prostate gland.

Having a good lower your cholesterol diet plan is important if you have high cholesterol and you would like to lower it.

But first, what are the benefits of lowering your cholesterol level?

You will greatly reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. With the reduction of cholesterol in your body, the formation of new plaque in your arteries will be reduced. This is important because if the plaque buildup in your arteries increases, the arteries may rupture and cause possible death.

The lower your cholesterol diet plan includes food to avoid and food to eat.

Food to avoid include:

1. sugar and alcohol as both of them contribute to weight gain which causes high cholesterol

2. processed food and food with high sodium content. Some people with high cholesterol also suffer from high blood pressure. Lowering the consumption of sodium helps keep the blood pressure within normal limits. Stay away from products with 300mg or more sodium per serving.

3. white bread and pasta. In place of them, eat more complex carbohydrates like berries, barley, and bulgur.

4. most commercial baked goods (cookies, crackers, cakes), doughnut icings and fast foods. They contain trans fats that increase cholesterol level.

5. meat, meat, meat, and more meat. It is good to eat meat in moderation, but do stay away from fatty meat.

Food to eat include:

1. high fat fist like salmon, herring, mackerel and albacore tuna. Try to eat them twice a week. These fish contain Omega-3 fatty acids which have been found to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides and increase HDL (good cholesterol). To prevent mercury poisoning, do not eat too much of these fish. Consider buying capsules of fish oil.

2. fruits and vegetables. The fiber in fruits and vegetables are not only good for reducing cholesterol; fruits and vegetables also contain different vitamins and minerals you will need.

3. legumes, oats, barley brown rice, apples and carrots because they contain soluble fiber which has been found to lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

4. olive oil ? it has been known to lower cholesterol level.

While this is not an exhaustive list, it is a good place to start. Remember to throw in a consistent exercise plan and your lower your cholesterol diet plan will help you lower your cholesterol real fast!

The cigarette smoking habit has seen an evolution in its perception and acceptance. Early in its history tobacco smoking was viewed as actually being good for you. How untrue that tale turned out to be. Instead we now know what tobacco does. It causes problems like cancer, problems in the lungs and heart disease. Those are just the major risks involved. Others like the smell and the expense of the addiction all contribute to the bad side effects.

National awareness of these problems have legislated action and laws against tobacco smoking and the need to quit smoking. Some of these actions include the following.

Anti-Smoking Public Service Announcements: Truth is one very successful ad agency that has depicted the bad effects of smoking. They portray the tobacco industry as an evil empire. Their commercials are also cryptic in showing the effects of tobacco and smoking. The ads they show have even reached audiences of the NFL Super bowl.

Public Laws have also curtailed smoking on a social level. In many states around the USA smoking bans in social places like restaurants, bars and recreation facilities are banned. The states with such bans include:

ALASKA, ARIZONA, ARKANSAS, CALIFORNIA, COLORADO, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MISSISSIPPI, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEVADA, NEW JERSEY, NEW MEXICO, NEW YORK, NORTH DAKOTA, OHIO, OKLAHOMA, OREGON, PENNSYLVANIA, PUERTO RICO, RHODE ISLAND,SOUTH CAROLINA, SOUTH DAKOTA, TEXAS, UTAH, VERMONT, WASHINGTON DC, WASHINGTON STATE, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, WYOMING

High taxes on cigarettes and cigars also cut deeper into the budgets of smokers. It is estimated that a smoker who starts early in his age will end up spending nearly two million dollars on cigarettes in his lifetime.

Agencies like insurance and health organizations also penalize smokers. This is accomplished with expensive fees and less services available due to the dangers of tobacco.

Nicotine patches and other products that help smokers stop smoking have also emerged on the market.

The result of all these restrictions, laws and legislations against tobacco smoking has made it a habit that is becoming inconvenient and expensive. Quitting smoking does come with expense and effort but the benefits are very bright. They include saving money every year and a longer lifespan. Better health and a longer lifespan. Your family will also benefit from better health and not having to deal with secondhand smoking.

Do you know everything you need to know about your health status?

Sure you look great in the mirror (or do you?), but do you know everything you need to know about your cardiovascular health, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol levels (both good and bad cholesterol)?

Preemptive disease prevention is the single most powerful technique anyone could ever use to extend their life and stay healthy and energetic for decades to come.

You might be a father of a young family who wants to be around to see his children go to college, get married, and have kids of their own. Who wouldn’t, of course?

But often, men and women have stressful, time-consuming jobs that don’t give you time for exercise, not to mention the crappy eating options that go along with that type of lifestyle. So you owe it to your family to know how your health is, and then to try and improve it.

Knowing your health information is extremely important to anyone that has a family history of heart disease or diabetes. Research shows that genetics are one of the biggest factors determining your risk for these diseases. So the more you know now, the better you can avoid problems in the future.

You want to be able to provide for your family for a long life, right? Spending a hundred bucks now on your health could save your family literally tens of thousands of dollars later.

And as a trainer, it is important to know your personal health information so that you can continue to set the best example to your clients. If you think you can eat all the fast food you want just because you are active, the truth is that it can seriously and negatively impact your health. And who would want to be trained by someone that has terrible cholesterol levels or high-blood sugar?

And what if, after getting your results back, you find something out of place. Won’t you be glad that you took the steps to correct it now instead of later? Getting your blood tested is such a simple thing to do. And when you get your results, you and your family will all have the piece of mind knowing your health status, and what you need to do to improve it.

Now I’ve been using strength and interval training for many years and that helps people lose weight faster than anything else. And although I’m still relatively young, I believe that it is never too early to know your blood cholesterol and blood sugar values.

In fact, I suggest that everyone over the age of 30 should get a baseline physical examination and get as many of the following blood tests done as possible.

So earlier this year, I went to great lengths to get my results. I was willing to do whatever I had to in order to get my results and to learn as much about my health as possible.

So not only did I get the normal blood tests done (cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar), but I also went to a University laboratory to have even more blood tests taken that will give me an even more accurate estimation of my cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk. These additional tests included hemoglobin-A1C (HBA1c), C-reactive protein (CRP), and homocysteine.

It is also important to know your hormone levels for fat loss, so I had insulin and testosterone tested as well. If your insulin levels are not controlled, you will have a hard time losing fat. And if you are a man with low testosterone levels, then you will have a hard time putting on muscle and losing fat. Men that eat a very low fat diet tend to have low testosterone. But they can be returned to normal simply by eating healthy fat sources.

So simply by following the strength and interval program and a healthy lifestyle (eating lean protein sources, healthy fat sources, low-glycemic and high-fiber fruits and vegetables), you can improve your health status. And add intense exercise to the mix, as found in the strength and interval workouts, and your health levels will improve dramatically so that you can live a long, prosperous life full of vitality.

My Results

(All goals are for primary prevention of disease)

Total Cholesterol = 157mg/dl (Normal = 150-225)

HDL = 54 mg/dl (Normal = 30-70, should be over 40)

LDL = 103 mg/dl (Normal = 70-130)

(Lab’s comment on HDL: Your level is very high!)

TG = 1.90 mM (Goal: less than 2.3mM)

Glucose = 73mg/dl (Goal = less than 130)

HBA1c = 4.6 mg/dl (Less than 7 is very healthy.)

(HBA1c measures your average blood glucose over the past 4 – 6 weeks and is considered to be a better indicator of diabetes risk than glucose.)

Insulin = 6.7 IU/ml (Normal = 6-20)

CRP = 1.16 mg/l (Normal = Up to 4.9)

(Normative range for untrained persons 1.6-4.3 while trained persons can be as low as 0.52)

Homocysteine = 11.2 ?M

(Normative ranges 5-15 ?M, average 10 ?M: 15-30 ?M = moderate hyperhomocysteinemia)

Testosterone (total) = 647ng/dl (Normal = 270-1100)

For more info on these measures, please see your doctor. For more info on training, look for articles on strength and interval training.
